NOVI SAD AND LARNACA SIGN AN AGREEMENT ON UNDERSTANDING AND COOPERATION

The Mayor of Novi Sad Žarko Mićin and the Deputy Mayor of the Cypriot city of Larnaca Iason Iasonidis signed an Agreement on Understanding and Cooperation at City Hall, thereby formally establishing a partnership between the two cities and opening new opportunities for the development of international relations and joint initiatives. The Agreement provides for cooperation in the fields of culture, sport and the economy, with a particular focus on tourism, higher education at university level, and information technologies, in which Novi Sad is one of the leading centres in the region.

- This Agreement is of multiple significance for Novi Sad. It confirms our clear orientation towards networking with European cities that share similar values, a vision of development and a strong cultural identity. Novi Sad and Larnaca are already connected through participation in international associations, such as the Assembly of European Regions, which enables cooperation on concrete projects and the exchange of knowledge at the European level. Of particular symbolic importance is the fact that Larnaca will be the European Capital of Culture in 2030, while Novi Sad held this title in 2022. By signing this Agreement, we continue to expand our network of friendly cities and strengthen Novi Sad’s international position - Mayor Žarko Mićin emphasised.

The event was attended by Member of Parliament and Chair of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with Cyprus, Biljana Pantić-Pilja, whom the Mayor thanked for her contribution to the signing of the Agreement, as well as Member of Parliament and member of the same Group, Aleksandar Mirković.

The Deputy Mayor of Larnaca, Iason Iasonidis, said that it was a great honour to be visiting Novi Sad on this auspicious occasion, particularly during the celebration of the City Day.

- On behalf of the Mayor of Larnaca, Andreas Vyras, and the City Council, I convey our warmest greetings and gratitude for the friendship and twinning of our cities. Larnaca is proud of its multicultural heritage, culture and vision of sustainable development, and we are especially pleased to have been selected as the European Capital of Culture 2030. We are confident that cooperation with Novi Sad will contribute to the further strengthening of our shared values, cultural ties and the prosperity of our citizens - said the Deputy Mayor of Larnaca, the third-largest city in Cyprus, which, as an important educational, tourist and cultural centre, has more than 100,000 inhabitants and a history spanning over 10,000 years.
